Power and Control
Power comes from the Latin word potere, which means "to be able." But things with power are much more than able — they're able to exert a lot of force. "The powers that be" are those who hold authority, and "the power behind the throne" refers to the people who exert influence without being formally in charge. When used as a verb, power means "to supply with mechanical or electrical energy," as in a nuclear-powered submarine.
The society is now full of Negative sides of Power . When did everyone get so powerful? I don’t know about you, but I am seeing more anxiety, anger and aggression in my interactions every day. Seems like when they did that it made them have more power in themself.
So today, we will talk with Casshan, a Muaythai fighter in the USA, who has to deal with aggressive people on many occasions, inside the boxing ring and outside of it.

How do you control yourself when meeting someone who is acting negatively toward you?
“I remember the difficult training that I’ve done for years, days, hours, months etc. and how it builds self-control. Martial arts is more about control than it is to display power. We train to empower our minds and character as well as our bodies.” - casshan
Does having a strong body make you feel more powerful than another person?
“That is not what I worry about mostly. I usually gauge my strength by how strong I used to be. Strength is also judged by one's ability to exercise self control. I feel confident that I can defend myself from others that may mean to harm me, so in one way, yes it does make me feel powerful.” - Casshan
What do you think about how small people (frail, poor, uneducated etc. ones that feel that they don’t have any power) can deal with those who act like they have a lot of power (rich, racist, or physically strong body)?
“They should empower themselves and work to empower others. You have to empower your mind differently, such as in ways that let you acquire education, experience, exposure etc. There are racist people that go to the gym and exercise too, even do muay thai. There are immoral people in high places in the world and very successful, too. Racism is weakness of the mind. Pride, arrogance - all of these things are weakness and delusion. Community helps me to remain grounded. Being active in communities is a reminder that I am dependent on many other people, not just money or my own physical strength/skills. Meeting people, school, travel - all of these things help me to have an open mind and to remain humble.”
How do you make yourself feel powerful?
“Be fit, acquire knowledge - exercise, study. Those are my favorite ways to gain power. Learning is powerful. For me, competency is a major part of feeling powerful. I like to feel as though I am capable of succeeding in the things that I attempt, so growing, learning and watching myself improve makes me feel very powerful.”
You speak a lot about self control, control and the balance with power. For Muay Thai, it is a source of power for you. During the COVID-19 pandemic and countries around the world urging their citizens to practice social distancing, how do you feel not being able to practice Muay Thai? How are you able to keep your power?
“It's very hard to resist the urge to go train with my friends in secrecy but going back to self-control, I am strong enough to resist. I created an at home COVID-19 Muay Thai program for myself where I do different exercises to keep myself occupied but it is very boring and lonely. Music helps and doing different exercises does too, also my mom goes to run with me in the evenings so it's not so bad. I don't want to get anyone sick so I don't go to the gym, restaurants or any public places except the grocery store.”
